what is a Lower Body Lift?

Our team of plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery performs dozens of lower body lift surgeries every year. This procedure addresses the loose skin and excess fat on the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks using an incision that encircles the body like a belt. Lower body lift surgery utilizes advanced techniques that can significantly  improve the fall or collapse of areas in the midsection of both men and women. It is especially ideal for those who have lost a large amount of weight. The result is a tighter and more evenly toned lower body contour that often provides patients with a newfound confidence. am i a candidate for a lower body lift?

Men and women with a significant amount of loose skin on their abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and hips are ideal candidates for this surgery. It is important that the weight loss has been stabilized and that a proper physical is completed to ensure the patient is ready to undergo this procedure. Patients who would benefit from the lower body lift are:

  • Women who have completed family planning and are ready to reshape their body after weight loss
  • Men or women with hanging skin of the abdomen and deflated and sagging buttocks
  • Men and women with overall good health

how a lower body lift surgery works

A lower body lift procedure uses an incision that goes around the midsection like a belt. In the abdominal area, this allows removal of excess and hanging skin of the abdomen and lifting of the pubic region. Posteriorly, the buttocks are lifted, and the excess skin on the sides of the body is removed to allow lifting of the outer thigh. Some patients may require liposuction in some areas if there are additional pockets of isolated fat to address. A lower body lift can be performed on an outpatient basis, but our plastic surgeons may recommend you stay the night in our overnight suite. Similar to a tummy tuck recovery, the majority of swelling begins to subside within weeks and final results are expected around 3 months. Most patients take 1-2 weeks off work for a body lift.

For patients with substantial weight loss and extra skin in the vertical and horizontal dimensions, your surgeon may recommend a Fleur-de-lis body lift, which is a surgical incision of a typical body lift as well as a vertical midline incision in the abdomen. While there is extra scar associated with this operation, it is sometimes required to achieve the tightest result. Your surgeon will discuss this possibility with you at your consultation.

what to expect after a lower body lift

The incision after a body lift is similar to a tummy tuck in front, and it is extended around the back but low enough to cover with underwear. Patients are lighter, can wear tighter-fitting clothes, and they do not have to worry about hiding their loose skin. This surgery typically creates a tighter appearance, a more toned look, and a more youthful contour.

Lower Body Lift FAQ

How much does a lower body lift cost?
The cost of a lower body lift procedure will vary from patient to patient. In your initial consultation, a member of our experienced team of surgeons will create a surgical plan that fits your needs and budget. Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery accepts many payment methods, including low-interest financing to make your treatment as easy to afford as possible.

Will I have visible scarring?
There are several factors that will contribute to how many scars you have and their visibility after a lower body lift. Our surgeons design incision patterns so they're either easily concealed in less visible areas like in natural skin folds or where they will be covered by undergarments. Your surgeon or someone on their team will discuss post-surgery instructions on how to help your sutures heal properly so the scars are flat and, in time, blend with your skin.

What can I expect during recovery?
Following your lower body lift procedure, you will likely experience moderate inflammation and bruising around the treatment areas. Follow-up appointments are necessary so your surgeon can monitor your recovery. It's important to contact Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery if you notice any symptoms of an infection or you have any concerns.

When should I consider getting a lower body lift?
If you're thinking about getting a lower body lift, schedule an appointment with one of our talented plastic surgeons to get more information about the process and when it may be right for you to schedule surgery. You should be at or close to a healthy, stable weight, because gaining or losing a significant amount of weight once you've had a lift may alter your results. Prior to surgery, your surgeon will also perform a physical exam to ensure that you're healthy enough to undergo the procedure.

Will I have to stay overnight in the hospital?
Most often, our surgeons require our patients to stay at least one night in a hospital or medical facility following a lower body lift. This overnight stay is for your comfort and safety, as your health is monitored and your pain controlled. Based on how many areas are being treated and your recovery speed, your surgeon may recommend you spend multiple nights. In your initial consultation, your surgeon will talk about facilities where you can stay and how long they estimate you will be there.
