what is a tummy tuck?

Our talented team of plastic surgeons offers tummy tuck surgery or abdominoplasty to men and women who desire a slimmer contour. If you have excess skin and fat in the mid section as a result of genetics, weight loss or pregnancy, a tummy tuck may be able to slim and tighten the abdominal area. In general with tummy tuck surgery, the areas addressed are excess fat deposits, hanging or loose skin of the abdomen, and loose abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis).

At Austin-Weston, we perform hundreds of tummy tuck operations each year and our surgeons are well versed in all types of tummy tuck surgery and revision surgery if you had a tummy tuck at another establishment and desire a refined result.

what qualifies you for a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery is life changing for most of our patients who have had the procedure. The ideal candidates for this dramatic transformation are:

  • Men and women who have extra skin and fat deposits in the abdominal area
  • Men and women who have stretch marks on their lower abdomen
  • Women with gapped abdominal muscles, also known as rectus diastasis
  • Men and women who have had weight loss surgery and have maintained their goal weight afterward
  • Women who are done having children and desire a permanent fix for the excess skin and fat

how does a tummy tuck work?

Tummy tuck patients usually have the procedure in our accredited outpatient surgical facility; however, when the tummy tuck is combined with other procedures, your surgeon may recommend you stay the night in our overnight facility. For the classic tummy tuck, which is removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightening of the internal abdominal muscles, the procedure can take from 2-4 hours, depending on the extend of liposuction performed at the same time.

Most patients take 1-2 weeks off work and we recommend 6 weeks before any heavy lifting or strenuous abdominal exercise.

A tummy tuck requires a scar along the lower abdomen. For patients who do not have much excess skin, the scar may be shortened and a 'mini' tummy tuck performed. For those with excess skin, an extended tummy tuck with a longer scar is recommended, or your surgeon may even recommend the scar go all the way around the body like a belt. This last procedure is referred to as a body lift. For patients with a tight lower abdomen and mainly excess skin in the upper abdomen, a reverse tummy tuck might be a recommended operation.

The majority of patients at Austin-Weston receive a DRAINLESS technique for tummy tuck. This means no messy drains, which are often painful and can increase the risk of infection.

how long is recovery from a tummy tuck?

The results following a tummy tuck procedure equate to a tighter, more toned abdominal appearance. Scarring is a part of this procedure, but our cosmetic surgeons will create the incisions with care, placing them in inconspicuous areas so that undergarments can hide them. Patients often feel that the skin removal and flat appearance of their stomach far outweighs any scarring that resides after surgery. The abdominal area is swollen after surgery, but typical healing shows decreased swelling by 3 weeks and a final result at 3-4 months, which is when postop photographs are taken.
