What is Ear Surgery?

Our team of plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery offers ear surgery to individuals who wish to alter the size and/or shape of their ears. Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a surgical procedure performed on children and adults to recontour protruding ears. Adults can have the procedure done at any age, and parents usually choose to have the procedure on children around 5 or 6 when teasing happens and before grade school.

If ears are found to be prominent during early infancy, the cartilage may still be moldable enough to recontour the ear using special splints that are worn around the clock from birth until the ear is reshaped to an acceptable place.

The result of otoplasty is a more symmetrical profile that complements the rest of the face and removes a large or prominent ear from the equation. Call our Reston, VA office to schedule a consult to learn how this procedure can help you.

What can I Expect during ear surgery?

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Incisions are made behind the ear to access the cartilage. Cartilage can then be manipulated through removal, reshaping, and reforming to repair the ears for an improved, symmetrical look. Excess skin from the ear can also be removed if needed. Ear surgery is commonly used to pin back protruding ears, repair earlobes, and over reshape an ear to achieve facial balance and natural-looking results. The length of the surgery depends on the technique and the condition of the patient's ears, but is generally around 1 hour per ear.

What are the Anticipated Results after ear surgery?

Following ear surgery, the ears will be dressed to provide protection from accidentally hitting them overnight. The dressings are removed the next day and ears examined. A headband may be recommended to wear while sleeping for several weeks afterward. Pain and discomfort is managed with oral pain medications, and swelling and bruising is largely improved by one week with final results expected by 3 months.  Results are long standing and should provide years of positive benefits for patients.

Ear Surgery FAQs

How long does ear surgery take to heal?
Your healing time will depend on a number of factors, some individual and some due to the extent of your surgery. We recommend keeping pressure off the ear for the first few days following surgery, such as sleeping on your opposite side and avoiding any high-collared clothing that could come into contact with the ear(s). At your post-operative appointment, our skilled team of plastic surgeons will determine your return to physical activity and suture removal timeline (if needed).

Why do people get ear surgery?
There are a number of reasons people elect for ear surgery. At our Reston, VA office, many of our patients come in to help adjust their ear proportions, rectify previous procedures, or address various congenital disorders. Some individuals also pursue ear surgery to help achieve cosmetic symmetry.

What are the risks of this procedure?
As with any surgical procedure, there are slight risks involved. Depending on your ears' initial placement, symmetry may not be as simple to achieve as one surgical procedure, and healing can also come with its own abnormalities. In addition, the scar tissue associated with surgery is especially worth considering around the ears, which are more prone to hypertrophic scarring than other sites on the body.
