About Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are designed to improve the texture of the skin on various parts of the body including the face, arms, hands, legs, neck, and chest. Peels address fine lines, hyperpigmentation (skin discoloration or age spots), sun-damaged skin, light freckling, and mild scarring. Chemical peels range in strength and stronger peels go deeper but also have more recovery and chance of complications. Facial peels can be combined with other surgical procedures such as a facelift for an overall improved and younger look. Call Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Reston, VA to schedule a private consult with one of our plastic surgeons to learn more about chemical peels.

Chemical Peel Reviews
"I am very conscious about some recent wrinkles that appeared around my eyes. I saw Dr. Weston last year to get his opinion for Bleph surgery. He is absolutely amazing and is so charming. He told me that I don't need any surgery, probably just some fillers or some chemical peel. I left feeling good about myself."- R.M. / Yelp / Sep 30, 2014
"I have seen Savannah S. Marks, LE for two dermatology procedures: BBL and my fist chemical peel. Not only is she skilled in her field, giving me professional advice, but her bedside manor is very comforting. I have recommended Savannah to several friends who look forward to seeing her. It is important for me to take care of my skin as I don't like to wear much make-up and she is helping me keep my skin tight and bright. She has listened to my personal goals/preferences and has been helpful in helping me figure out which procedures best suit my needs and wallet. She has also sold me make-up and has been a great resource for beauty and cosmetic needs and questions. I plan on visiting Savannah for years to come. Thank you Savannah, I wouldn't trust anyone else with a laser on my face. ;)"- S.N. / Yelp / Nov 30, 2017

"Professional and Courteous - I have been seeing Savannah for over a year. She has always provided me with expert advice as far as procedures and professional products, and always with a warm demeanor and a smile. I have received chemical peels and laser treatments, and receive compliments on my skin from family, friends, and strangers. I am confident when asking for guidance that I will receive effective advice, and that..."- A. / RealSelf / Dec 31, 2017
"Savannah Marks is an exceptional medical esthetician -- knowledgeable, skilled, professional, and efficient -- but with an engaging personality that helps you relax, no matter the procedure. She has a variety of tools at her disposal, from private-label products to the latest cutting-edge lasers and chemical peels, that deliver superior results. I am often asked by women -- some decades younger -- what I use on my skin. I tell them to go see Savannah!"- A.M. / Yelp / Nov 18, 2019
What to Expect with Chemical Peel
Before any chemical peel, the skin will be assessed to determine the exact concerns and the most appropriate type of peel. During your initial consultation with one of our licensed estheticians, your skin will be assessed and any pre-procedure treatment medications will be discussed. Sometimes pre-treatment is recommended for 4-6 weeks before a chemical peel for certain skin types.
Once you are ready for a treatment, the skin will be thoroughly cleansed and prepped prior to the peel. The length of treatment depends on the type of peel administered. Afterward, the patient will need to follow a skincare routine to protect the skin and enhance the effects of the peel. Additional treatments may be scheduled for maximum results.
The superficial/light chemical peel is the mildest form that works by removing the outermost layer of skin. The peel is usually a diluted version of glycolic acid that is left on the skin for a few minutes. Afterward, the skin will be slightly red, but there will be no downtime. The patient’s skin may peel slightly for 3 – 5 days and a series of treatments are usually required for optimal results.
Medium Depth Peels
A medium depth peel removes several layers of skin to treat deeper skin problems. These peels are good for moderate to severe lines and wrinkles, as well as moderate scars and other skin problems. Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA), is applied in a controlled manner for a specific length of time. After a certain point, the acid will be neutralized to stop its effects. The recovery period is about ten days for this peel and the results will be more dramatic than a light peel. The risk is higher for hyperpigmentation in patients with darker skin tones.
A deep peel produces the most dramatic results, so it is reserved for more serious skin conditions. Since it’s an invasive procedure, local anesthesia or numbing cream may be used. Phenol is used for severe lines and wrinkles, various facial irregularities, and deep acne scars. It takes a patient at least 14 days to recover since the peel is similar to second-degree burns. Most patients will only need one peel to reach their aesthetic goals. This treatment is reserved for patients with extensive damage, or those who desire a deeper result after trying more subtle options. This is not often used in patients with darker skin tone as it can make dark spots worse.
