About Kybella

The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery is pleased to offer a noninvasive alternative to neck liposuction. Kybella is an FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness. It is a great option for men and women who have stubborn fat pockets under the chin area or who simply desire a slimmer or more defined neckline. Kybella is comprised of a deoxycholic acid formula, which is a substance that is naturally found in the body. When Kybella is injected into the neck area, it specifically targets fat cells to reduce the appearance of a double chin. To schedule an appointment with one of our plastic surgeons, call our Reston, VA office today.

Ideal Candidates

The best candidates for Kybella:

  • Have moderate to severe fat beneath the chin, which gives the appearance of a double chin
  • Desire a nonsurgical approach for fat reduction
  • Desire long-term results
  • Understand Kybella offers a fraction of surgical result and is not a substitute for liposuction of the neck

What to Expect

A number of small injections will be made in the fat under the chin during this outpatient procedure. A local numbing agent is also used as there is some pain and burning immediately after injection that lasts several hours. The treatment typically takes around 5 – 10 minutes. For the first few days afterward, there is significant and visble swelling in the neck area that usually resolves by one week. Patients usually need 2 – 4 treatments to see a result and the injections are spaced out by 6 weeks.

Anticipated Results

Some patients may notice a reduction of fat after just a single treatment but most patients will notice improvements after 2 – 3 treatments. This result is significantly less than a surgical outcome and reserved for patients who are not surgical candidates.

KYBELLA FAQ

How much does KYBELLA cost?
Your costs for KYBELLA will vary based on how many appointments you need. In your consultation, a personalized treatment plan will be made to work with your budget and goals. A team member will also talk about payment options with you during your first appointment.

How does KYBELLA work?
Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in KYBELLA, is designed to break down and destroy fat cells in the upper neck. After the fat cells are destroyed, these fat cells will not regenerate. This is why additional KYBELLA treatments should not be needed as soon as you have reached your desired outcome.

Can KYBELLA be used to treat other areas of the body?
Currently, KYBELLA can only be used to treat the submental (or upper neck) area. KYBELLA has been proven to effectively reduce the fat in the upper neck that creates the appearance of a double chin. KYBELLA isn't approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for any other areas of the face or body.

Am I eligible for a KYBELLA treatment?
There are a few factors that could make you ineligible to receive a KYBELLA treatment. You must be over the age of 18 years old, not breastfeeding or pregnant, and you should not have an active infection in or around your neck. Prior to receiving treatment, you are encouraged to be open about your medical history and health concerns so they can decide if you can safely receive the treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need?
During your initial consultation, a personalized KYBELLA treatment plan will be tailored to match your desired results. Typically, patients get between 2 – 4 KYBELLA treatments to achieve their goals. KYBELLA appointments need to be made around one month apart. You shouldn't get any more than six treatments.
